Column: Spring “Osusowake”

A box arrived from my mom, filled with vegetables, rice, spring sansai (wild mountain vegetables), and a handwritten letter. In the letter, she wrote: “春のおすそわけです.” “Osusowake” means sharing a small part of something you received or enjoy, to show a bit of care and warmth. That night, we had a lovely dinner with Simmered warabi (bracken fern) and tempura of tara-no-me (Japanese angelica tree buds).
